Hi! Okay, this board is for those on the self forums who have stuff to discuss (eds...eating worries...ect...) that sometimes is kinda put aside on Self (although I completely understand why!). BUT (and I will rewrite this post later to make it more explanatory) let's remember a couple of things girls: 1. No judging. 2. If you get really annoyed with a post, don't post a rant about it...just email me (dreamchimes4@sbcglobal.net) and I'll see if anything should be done. 3. I'd rather no one try to give out serious medical advice...this board is more of a support and suggest system, not a medical reference. 4. Be gentle with yourself and with each other...we're all in this together. I hope that not only those suffering from ED come here...cause I like getting other people's support too. Love ya all, Nicole

yep! I found it through self. I've read a few of your postings nicole, and I think it's great how much you care and are willing to help everyone out. ANd I also think it's admirable that you have come so far!!
I was wondering if you could tell help me out with this whole starvation mode thing. I was eating very less and gaining weight on only 5-600 calories. And now I am the fattest ive ever been in my life. Before I ever started 'dietine' I always ate whatever I wanted and never gained. I actually had to each a lot just to maintain. But after going away to college.. I put on 10 lbs within a few months and began really restricting what I ate. It was to the point where I would only drink some tomatoe soup all day but have a pop belly, which made me not want to eat even further.. After reading some of your posts and some great advice from jennifer yesterday.. I 've crammed down almost 1500 cal last night . BUT.. I am already fatter! I hate this
Okay, sorry such a long post, but do you think I will EVER recover my metabolism? Do you think I could have caused some kind of irreversable hormonal damage. THanks so much.. i would appreciate any input you may give!

hi helen! aww your so sweet okay...the bad news is that yes, you did mess up your metabolism...but the good news is that it will get back to normal! (it might take awhile...and you'll have to STICK with eating a good number of calories...no more yo yo dieting! ^_^ but that's a good thing, who likes yoyo dieting anyway??) okay, so what was happening was that when you were eating 500-600 calories a day your body was obviously not getting enough to fuel you, so it was trying to hord ANYTHING you gave it because it never got enough to just go through the cycle of burning. its like if you are put in an empty room, given one piece of bread, and told, "okay that has to last a week" well your not gonna eat it all on the same day, are you? your gonna take little bites and pieces throughout the week. its the same thing. the reason why you still feel "fat" (even though you probably aren't fat....we usually have distorted images of ourselves.) after eating 1500 calories, is because your body doesn't trust you right now because you deprived it for so long. so it saw those calories and 1) FREAKED OUT cause it hadn't had that many in awhile, and 2) said "YAY FOOD!!!! I BETTER TAKE CARE OF THIS!" lol. but don't worry, once your body starts to trust you again, your metabolism will realign and then start burning the calories you take in instead of just storing them. i'm not sure how long this takes, i think i'm still going through the process....but i'll let you know when it gets better for me lol most people say to add calories little by little to your diet, and i guess that COULD work for some people, but i had to go all the way at once. i literally went from about 500-600 to around 2000 in a few weeks. now i'm eating around 3500 on weekdays and 4000 on weekends, but then, i'm trying to gain so yeah.... i think 1500 is a good number to start with, but i'd need your stats and stuff to determine what it should get to. i'm thinking around 1800. its really sad how knowledgeable i am at all this stuff....lmao. that's what the ed did to me, i researched EVERYTHING about body and food and all that crap. so yeah, just ask away and i'll be happy to answer with what i've got and please do increase your cals, it'll be well worth it in the end! love, nicole

Hey ladies!! I am now 115! I have officially gained 9 pounds!! How do I maintain? Where should I cut back? I am going to start drinking skim again and not have anymore dried fruit. Where else? Will I keep gaining? Am I still eating too little? Ahhh... I am so confused!!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! That is HUGE!!!! ...now of course, managing the mega onslaught of how to "change focus" and not get "out of control"--without doing a stereotypical circle back into eating disorders! My biggest suggestion [having been completely free--and relapsing!], is make adjustments SLOWLY! Especialy since you are so active and definitely not eating "too much" [unlike some recovered who are at 4000 on bedrest!]--so your metabolism could still use some improving, and now would be the worst time to screw it, just when it's trusting you to get the calories AND your healthier! Maybe 2% instead of skim? or 1-2c. your old milk and the rest 2%? Be sure to talk to your nutritionist too! That's what they're there for--your safety net! And whatever you do, goal weight does not = time to go back to all the diet behaviors and habits and rules and foods! Now you can embrace life as a REAL PERSON with normal eating habits--cuz you are ROCING AWESOME PENNY, not some weird girl in a cycle of disordered eating for life! BIG BOUNCY HUGS TO YOU! WAY TO GO--and hang steady, we're here for ya!

Oh yeah...this is dani...
Also, I noticed you said you were 5'7"...your body MIGHT still want a little more weight, since that's really just BARELY in the healthy range, even if you like it--that'll effect why maybe your metabolism isn't QUITE where it should be. Also, I don't mean this in a bad way, it's a common error, but do you round up a lot? Your days still look REALLY light--more like someone who's watching their weight than an athlete!...NOT to say you haven't come miles, but from a general, overall perspective.
Mostly though: talk to your nutritionist! I have some studies and my experience, but she is the real pro with your body and food!

penny- CONGRATULATIONS! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! and i wish i could help you with maintaining, but that's actually something i'm gonna be lost on when i get to it. lol i'm sorry helen- yes, just keep eating hun, and your metabolism will learn to trust you again. BUT...and this is a very big BUT...if you still keep gaining and gaining, i suggest you go see a nutritionist cause she'll probably be able to pin point better what the problem is but good job on the motivation! dani- the reason penny's days look so light is because she doesn't type all the milk she drinks...she drinks ALOT of milk that adds alot of cals. lmao love, nicole

I know nicole--I don't think she's "dieting"--just maybe pushing it a little with the 2600 calories--but maybe not with all the milk! LOL--but I definitely know the milk counts--otherwise she wouldn't be at half of 2000+!
Even so, it's okay to eat full meals and drink too--and I'm not trying to be critical, just making observations--it's a scary transition!

Hey! No, I appreciate your concern! I know my meals are still pretty light! Even though I am "trying to maintain" - the only real change I will be making is switching from whole-2% to only 1% - the food will stick the same (or maybe more!) because I am getting so much of a workout w/ track and such. And yes, Nicole (LOL) I drink A TON OF MILK!! But I can't help it! It's just sooo darn good. And when I start, I just can't stop pouring!! haha. That's how it has been lately w/ cashew butter before bedtime too. One tbsp after another... then just another spoonful... then another... then another lol. Oh well, it's healthy fat that I need to start my period again! Okay g2g!! LOVE YOU ALL SOOO MUCH! <3 PENNY!

Can I join ? I am always posting and responding to ED posts on Self and I just don't feel "Welcome" anymore! I'm recovering from anorexia/exercise bulimia turned binge eating. My eating is now under control, but it is more like my emotions and issues that I'm still working on.
